Business Statement on Electrification in the EU

We have joined more than 70 leading businesses and business organisations calling for an EU target of 50% electrification of final energy use by 2040, ahead of the release of the European Commission’s Electrification Action Plan on 10 June.

We urge EU leaders to seize the electrification opportunity to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and security. Energy efficiency is crucial to accelerating electrification across sectors and making it more affordable.

We call for:

  • A binding 2040 energy efficiency target and the systematic application of the Energy Efficiency First principle.
  • A 2040 target for 50% electrification of final energy use.
  • A stronger EU strategic approach to clean industrial leadership powered by decarbonised, domestically produced clean energy, with energy efficiency at its core.
  • Stable and effective economic signals, including a strong EU ETS and targeted financing mechanisms to accelerate energy efficiency improvements and electrification.
  • Accelerated digitalisation of electricity distribution networks to improve energy efficiency, flexibility and grid resilience, enabling more efficient use of energy across the system.

Civil society and industry call for a Future-Proof Post-2030 EU Energy Framework

Today, civil society and industry leaders have joined forces to call on EU leaders to deliver a future-proof post-2030 energy framework.

As Europe faces geopolitical instability, record-high energy prices, and the urgent need to address climate change, immediate and ambitious solutions are required. A strong post-2030 framework, built on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and renewable-based electrification, offers a clear path to phase out fossil fuels and secure Europe’s energy future.

Setting binding targets for renewable energy and energy efficiency will not only reduce costs for citizens and businesses but also strengthen Europe’s security, competitiveness, and affordability.

The signatories urge EU institutions to act swiftly by setting ambitious targets and accelerating the transition to a sustainable energy system.

Implementing EED: not just a legal obligation, but a strategic opportunity for Europe.

EU-ASE has sent an open letter urging EU member states to accelerate implementation of the Energy Efficiency Directive. The energy efficiency sector already employs 1.2 million people in Europe and effective, timely transposition of the EED will unlock even more investment, innovation and domestic manufacturing.

Implementing energy efficiency measures, among other things:
• Lowers bills for citizens and businesses, with the EU already cutting energy use by 12% while growing its economy by 25%.
• Reduces system costs, alleviating pressure on grids and making electrification more affordable.
• Leads to energy security, with every 1% efficiency improvement cutting gas imports by 2.6%.
• Drives progress toward climate neutrality

We stand ready to support member states with any technical challenges in delivering the directive.
