We have joined more than 70 leading businesses and business organisations calling for an EU target of 50% electrification of final energy use by 2040, ahead of the release of the European Commission’s Electrification Action Plan on 10 June.

We urge EU leaders to seize the electrification opportunity to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and security. Energy efficiency is crucial to accelerating electrification across sectors and making it more affordable.

We call for:

  • A binding 2040 energy efficiency target and the systematic application of the Energy Efficiency First principle.
  • A 2040 target for 50% electrification of final energy use.
  • A stronger EU strategic approach to clean industrial leadership powered by decarbonised, domestically produced clean energy, with energy efficiency at its core.
  • Stable and effective economic signals, including a strong EU ETS and targeted financing mechanisms to accelerate energy efficiency improvements and electrification.
  • Accelerated digitalisation of electricity distribution networks to improve energy efficiency, flexibility and grid resilience, enabling more efficient use of energy across the system.
