How large is Europe’s energy efficiency industrial ecosystem — and how much can it grow?
We’ve updated our infographic showing the scale of Europe’s energy efficiency industrial strength today and its potential for tomorrow. The result is the Energy Efficiency Tree, telling a remarkable story about the contribution of energy efficiency to the European economy. In 2025/26, Europe’s energy efficiency industrial ecosystem:
- Generated approximately €200 billion in turnover
- Supported 2.2 million jobs
- Was associated with 21,361 patents filed since 2000
Looking ahead to 2030–2035, these figures could grow to approximately €426 billion in turnover, 4.8 million jobs and 39,200 patents.
These estimates capture direct economic activity across a range of energy efficiency technologies. They are conservative and do not fully account for the wider economic impact across complex value chains.
The Energy Efficiency Tree makes these figures visible.
Its roots run deep, representing the thousands of companies, technologies, investments and innovations spread across Europe.
Its trunk represents a growing industrial ecosystem, supporting growth, employment and innovation.
And its canopy? That is the opportunity. It illustrates the sector’s potential and what Europe could achieve over the next decade. Realising this potential requires the right policy, regulatory and financial conditions, including a stable, ambitious, long-term EU-wide framework with a binding energy efficiency target.
With the right conditions in place, this tree can grow substantially, creating more value, more jobs and more innovation across the European economy.
